OUGD603 EXTENDED PRACTICE: LAUREN BRANDING FAIRY TALE RESEARCH

As Lauren's branding is to be based on the style of fairytales, research has been undertaken into the type used in current fairytales to give me an understanding of how these current fairytales are represented.

Cinderella

Beauty and the Beast

Sleeping Beauty

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

The Little Mermaid

Alice in Wonderland

Evaluation

What's interesting is that these fairy tales all have a similar style of typeface, even though they are all fairly different. They all use a serif, bold typeface, in a mixture of upper and lower case. Blackletter is also surprisingly common across the typeface choices, perhaps a reflection of the era they were written in or produced as films in. Alice in Wonderland and Beauty and the Beast are the only two which feature a scripted or handwritten style typeface, and even in these two they are only used as a secondary typeface.

This should definitely be taken into consideration when creating Lauren's logo, as although she wants a feminine logo, perhaps the serif typeface could appear as a secondary typeface, to still reference fairy tales.

From this research I have definitely had a better understanding of the role of fairy tales within Lauren's project, as I feel she has been inspired by the romantic side of the fairytales, not necessarily the appearance, and the typefaces for these fairy tales don't appear particularly feminine or romantic.

However, there are quite a lot of swashes of most of these current fairy tale logos, so perhaps this is something that should try to be incorporated into the logo, as this is definitely feminine and romantic, and is a clear representation of fairy tales.
