OUGD603 EXTENDED PRACTICE - ARMED FORCES - PUBLICATION PRODUCTION

Stock
The stock chosen to use for this publication was G F Smith Colourplan in Mist, at 135gsm. The choice was made to go for an off-white coloured stock to reflect the rugged nature of the Armed Forces, how it’s not a pristine, clean and tidy career, that you are expected to get dirty, and spend a lot of time outdoors (depending on your role).
This was also the lightest weight stock available of this colour, ideally 100gsm would of been perfect, to ensure minimal splay when the publication is folded and bound, however this weight wasn’t stocked in store. In the end though the slightly thicker weighting of the 135gsm was a positive as it gave the publication a great sturdy feel, like it wouldn’t get bent and be more durable.

Binding method
A stitched binding method was chosen to be used for the final publication, taken directly from the research into different binding methods, as this particular method ensured the pages would lie flat, no glue would be necessary, and the spine can be left exposed, revealing the method taken to bind the publication.
The use of a stitched binding method also reflects the use of ropes and knots within the Armed Forces training, which is reflected in the binding, creating a synthesis between the production methods used and the content of the publication and research undertaken, each influencing one another.
