OUGD602 PPP - PRESENTATION & NOTES

PPP Presentation

Notes:
Slide 1 - Hello!

Slide 2 - Personal Branding Level 5 vs Level 6
This is my personal branding from Level 5 and 6, I haven’t changed much since Level 5 as I thought the typeface I chose for my name still reflects who I am creatively pretty well. In Level 5 I used Brusho as the background pattern for my business cards, however this made the type hard to read, so this year I have used green marbelling instead, which makes a much more even background so the type stands out a lot more.
I still wanted my personal branding to reflect how I like to use both digital and analogue techniques as well, which was why I’ve marbled directly onto my business cards, and used vinyl for the lettering on the front as well, to create a sharp contrast between the two.

So because I marbled directly onto my business cards each one has a unique design, which is something I really like, as each one is a little bit different.
I’ve also kept the back of my business cards really simple with a lot of space so I can write a message on the back, and so they don’t look too busy.

Slide 4 - Instagram and Website
I’ve got an Instagram account and a website on Adobe Portfolio which I use to present my work.
I use Instagram a lot more as it’s much easier to upload posts and I think it reaches a much wider audience as well. I also like to post in progress photographs of my work on Instagram, because I feel like Instagram is more like a blog rather than showcasing my finished designs, and it also keeps a steady stream of posts as well, to keep connected.
I use my website to post my finished projects, as this is a much more professional platform, and is what I’ve included on the back of my business cards as well. I write a little bit about each project so that people can understand the concept and the thinking behind each brief, rather than only seeing the end result.
I also have my Instagram account linked up so you can access it through my website as well.

Slide 5 - Two favourite briefs
These are the two briefs I have enjoyed working on the most this year. The YCN UK Greetings one on the left and my character a day brief I set myself on the right.
I really enjoyed doing the UK Greetings brief as I think I chose a theme which had a lot of scope and allowed me to be really creative and free with it, and I think I just really enjoyed producing the idea I had for it. There were also a lot of physical outcomes to this brief, which made it easier to visualise how the end result would look, which I think really helped with the designing process.
The other brief I’ve really enjoyed doing is something I set myself called Character a Day, where I drew a different character each day, using both digital and analogue techniques, as something fun to do each day, giving me a lot of creative freedom. I posted these characters to Instagram each day with a three point description to give them a bit of context. Because I enjoyed doing this so much, and created so many characters, I wanted some way to show them all collectively, in a way that was more interesting than just creating a book wit them all in, so I decided to make them into Top Trumps, which worked really well as I already had the three point description to build the scoring topics from, as use as the Top Trumps File.

Slide 6 - Internships Photos
I’ve done two internships this year, both being very different from one another. The first one I did was at Empire Magazine in London during January for a week, and the second one was working at Venn Creative design studio in Cornwall for three weeks over Easter.

Slide 7 - What I did during each Internship
Read off what I did at Empire from Slide 7.
From doing this internship I realised that I enjoyed adapting the layouts from print to digital and adding in new content to existing brand guidelines and layouts much more than actually creating new designs for features.
I also enjoyed working in such a small team as well, as there was only 3 other people in the design department, so it was a very tight knit group to work within which made it really friendly.
I didn’t like the commute in every day though, as I had to get the tube in and it was so busy every day, it just wasn’t a pleasant experience.
Read off what I did at Venn Creative from Slide 7.
This was a very different experience to my internship at Empire, but I also really enjoyed it. The commute was really lovely, it was a little longer, but I got to walk through countryside and Penryn campus grounds which are beautiful and only had a short train journey in each day, so that was great.
I got to do a lot of work with one client, creating stage 2 designs for them, which I found quite challenging as one of the founders of Venn Creative wasn’t sold on the idea they chose from the first stage, so there was a lot of changing of ideas and designs throughout the whole process. But this was also great for me to experience as this is what happens in industry, it’s not always going to go smoothly.
During this internship I found I enjoyed producing additional content for brands working to their existing brand guidelines more than creating new designs for brands, which is similar to how I felt at Empire, so this was useful to discover and reaffirm what I thought I realised at Empire.
So two very different internships but both were really great experiences and very useful as well.

Slide 8 - DBA
For the DBA brief I worked with Emily and Richelle. I really enjoyed the whole process as I think we worked really well as a group, as we each produced different elements within the brief, and we communicated really well throughout the whole process too.
Having to present our final product and design to DBA in the way that we did was really useful as well, as it felt like a proper pitch, and definitely prepared me for having to pitch ideas to clients in industry as well.

Slide 9 - Level 6…
This year has definitely been really challenging for me, one of the main things I’ve struggled with is managing my time effectively across Extended Practice and COP, I think I didn’t work fast enough at the beginning of the year, planning each brief out and sticking to the plan, as in hindsight I should of done, so that I would of been able to do everything I wanted to.
I’ve also found working with a student from another course on their personal branding really challenging as well, as they kept on changing their mind n the design and took a long time to get back to me with what they wanted exactly. So this was challenging wanting to get it finished but not being able to.
Something I’ve really enjoyed during this year is was being able to decide exactly what briefs I wanted to do, and being able to create my own briefs as well based around my own interests, as this has meant I have produced work I am really interested in.
I’ve also really enjoyed my internships, they’ve been really positive experiences and have taught me a lot about myself as a creative working within the industry, and what I enjoy doing.
If I was to do this year again I would like to do more with web design, as this is something I set out to do at the beginning of the year but somehow haven’t managed to do. I would also of liked to explore more using the screen printing facilities, incorporating them into my briefs more, and getting a better understanding of the process.

Slide 10 - The next stage…
This summer I am volunteering with the Leeds based charity Think Pacific in Fiji for a month, and will be running arts workshops and coaching sports to Fijian children in rural communities. This is something I’m really excited about as I will be combining my love of art and sport in an amazing country for a great cause. I’m actually having a cake bake sale on 12th May in the cafe to raise money for the charity, which should be really good.
This next year I am then hoping to save up enough money to go travelling across Asia, Australia and New Zealand, as I have always really wanted to visit this area and I feel like now is a great time to do it.
Then after I come back from travelling I am hoping to get a job working as an in-house designer for a brand or magazine in the Cornwall area, as after my internship with Venn Creative and living down there for 3 weeks I discovered how much I love that area. I’ve discovered that I’d prefer to work as an in-house designer for a brand or magazine as opposed to within a design studio as my internships have showed me that I prefer working to brand guidelines and existing layouts and frameworks, rather than creating whole new fresh ideas constantly. I’d also like to work for a brand or magazine that has a strong digital presence, as this is something I am really interested in developing me knowledge of.

Slide 11 - Thank you!
And that’s it, thanks.
