OUGD603 EXTENDED PRACTICE - CHARACTER A DAY - CARD GAME IDEA GENERATION

Mind Maps

To decide on what card game to produce a mind map exploring all the different options was produced, thinking about their pros and cons and their potential target audiences. Because the characters that were created were child friendly, colourful, and fun, this should definitely influence the type of card game that is produced, and have a huge impact on who these cards will appeal to, for example they may not appeal to teenagers.

The ideas of snap/pairs, collector cards, playing cards, and top trumps were explored. It was thought about the target audiences for each idea, how they would be used, whether this is a new idea or has been done a lot, and the purpose of these cards. It was also considered the target audiences for each idea, for example collectors cards would be aimed more at young arty people as opposed to children.

Initially the Top Trumps idea didn’t gain much traction, however when talking to a friend with young children, they explained how Top Trumps have been really influential to their children learning to read and spot characters they know from films, and become engaged with numbers as well, as opposed to just having the cards look ‘pretty’ as they would for collectors cards or playing cards. With Top Trumps they can help children learn and be a fun tool for this.

Following on from this discussion the Top Trumps idea was expanded on extensively, thinking about the age range, and how they can help children learn. This idea was also explored creatively, in how the cards will be packaged, what the name for the Top Trumps will be, what the scoring areas could be, and what the general atmosphere of the cards should feel like, and what this reflects/portrays. I also considered whether there are existing Top Trumps brand guidelines, and this is something that should be explored in more depth.
