OUGD603 EXTENDED PRACTICE: CHARACTER A DAY - TOP TRUMPS RESEARCH

Initial secondary and primary research has been undertaken into existing Top Trumps cards and packs to see which score topics they already use, and the different layouts of the cards as well, to gain inspiration for my own Top Trumps cards and to ensure they stay within the brand guidelines of existing Top Trumps cards.

Secondary Research

TSUM TSUM

TSUM TSUM Top Trumps are a similar style to the Character A Day characters I've produced, in that they are very cute, colourful, and childlike. This is a great inspiration starting point for my research. The score topics they used are friendship, adventure, humour, mischief and top trumps rating, so 5 score topics in total. What I have learnt about this and through past experiences with Top Trumps is that the score topics are a reflection of the images themselves, the topics are almost brand guidelines for the Top Trumps theme. So you have to be careful what score topics you choose so as to reflect the Top Trumps theme and characters in the right light.
WHat's interesting is that these cards also have a little description about each character, giving them more depth and a story behind them, which I know is something children like.
These cards are also listed as a 3+ age range.

Extreme Sports

These Top Trumps take on a similar content to TSUM TSUM, although being so different in style and theme They have 5 different score topics (adrenaline rush, learning curve, year created, basic gear cost, and Top Trumps rating) the same as TSUM TSUM, and also have the same last score topic: Top Trumps rating. Perhaps this rating is a way to compare the different themes of Top Trumps?
These cards also have a little bit more extra information than TSUM TSUM, they have a interesting fact about the sport, and then key equipment you need to do the sport, in illustrated and text form.
These cards don't have an age range listed on the website, however guessing by the more complex terminology and less cute appearance they'd be aimed at older people, around 9-15 year olds.
What's interesting in these is that they have a personalised Top Trumps logo, with the O being turned into a skull, which gives them more of an identity and personality.

Trolls

What Ive recognised about the Top Trumps I have looked at so far, is that the extra description about the each character is called a Top Trumps File.
In these Trolls Top Trumps they also have added information (similarly to Extreme Sports) in that they have a snippet of what they're great at or want to do (this one is on the lookout for danger), and they also show what Troll family they're in (this ones a Rainbow Troll). This helps to group the Trolls into families or sections and helps to build up more of a story between them all.
These Trolls Top Trumps however don't have a Top Trumps rating in the score topics, however do have 5 score topics overall (hair power, confidence, musical talent, creativity, survival skills). These score topics aren't simply listed, they are placed within leaves, so maybe this is something I can look on at how to display the score topics.

Star Wars: Rogue One

These cards separate the characters into two distinct groups, the light and the dark side, which is one of the main features of the Star Wars films. Again these cards have a Top Trumps File section, and these ones also feature a Top Trumps ratings score topic as well, alongside the 4 other score topics (honour, fear and anger, attitude, greed). These score topics feature two from each side of the Force, making the results balanced across both sides.
The style of these cards also match that of the film and content, taking on much more of a character profile appearance, as this reflects the film well.

Minions

The Top Trumps File of these Minions Top Trumps take on much more of a scene setting role, describing the specific event that card is based on. This is quite effective as these almost tell us a series of miniature stories. These cards also feature the Top Trumps Rating as well, which seems to be a pretty common feature across the majority of the Top Trumps themes. The other score topics are cleverness, bravery, leadership, and mischievous. They use a simple blue and yellow colour scheme to keep in line with the Minions branding.

Top 30 Emotis

These are cards which aren't involved in an existing story, as the majority of the others are. SO it's interesting to see the content for these. They again feature a Top Trumps file and Top Trump rating. The Top Trumps file explains more so the use of the heart emoti, as opposed to giving it a story. The score topics are friendliness, fury, tweet rank, and colour. I'm not sure how you can rate an emoti based on it's colour though. They don't provide any additional information as other cards have done.

Primary Research

Roald Dahl

The Roald Dahl Goodies and Baddies Top Trumps come with 31 cards including a 'how to play' card, which details the instruction on how to play the game. The reverse of the how to card features a special image and layout, being what you would see when buying the Top Trumps. It has foiling over Top and Specials to give it an added quality to it. this is also the main place which states the exact name of the cards - goodies and baddies, as I can't see it anywhere else. The normal reverse of the character cards takes on an extremely similar style to the how to reverse, only with added illustrations and Top Trumps contact information. It also doesn't have the special foiling as well, which is expected as it is an expensive finish to have.
The cards are split into yellow and purple sections, and it's interesting to notice that this split is maintained throughout every single card, even the reverse sides. This helps to maintain a consistent aesthetic and give the cards some structure.
The score topics these cards feature are brains, kindness, appearance, greed, cunning, and Roald Dahl rating. This Roald Dahl rating is replacing the Top Trumps rating score topic, as these are specials cards. I'm not sure what distinguishes a Top Trumps theme as being specials though.
These cards also feature a part which identifies which book the character is from, so you can relate back to it and find it in the story.

General Findings
- Top Trumps File is included with every character
- Top Trumps Rating score section is included in most themes
- The Top Trumps logo is always included on each character card, on both sides, except for the specials
- There is normally 5 score sections, however in the specials there are 6
- A 'how to' card is included in each pack
- There are 31 cards in total
- Each theme has a different coloured plastic casing, to reflect the colour palette of the cards
- The character is always at the top with the score topics and fact file at the bottom
- The score topics are seen as a reflection of the style of the theme/film/characters, so this should be carefully considered
- The 'how to' reverse is a swanky, higher quality version of the characters reverse
- Except for the specials, there is a coloured boarder around each character card on the character side
