OUGD603 EXTENDED PRACTICE - BRASIL PUBLICATION - INITIAL DESIGNS

Initial Sketches
Initial sketches were created to plan out the appearance of the front cover, which would then follow through to the content of the publication.
As this is a photographic publication, it was essential to reflect this in the cover, so naturally these sketches included a lot of spaces for photographs. An idea was experimented with of using the Brasilian flag shapes as holders for photographs, potentially finding photographs with similar colours to each section, to almost recreate the flag but out of the photography.
A relatively simple idea was taken across these layouts, one which was inspired by the aesthetic research undertaken into Fallzine, which allows the photographs to speak for themselves.

Front Cover Digital Experiments
Following on from the initial sketched experiments, the front cover layouts were created digitally using the actual photographs.
A sans serif typeface was chosen to reflect the contemporary style of the publication, and to reflect Brasil’s modern and up to date qualities, as they have advanced so much since the Rio 2016 Olympics.
What was evident from these experiments was the simpler the layout the more effective it was, as it allowed you to take in the full photograph with no unimportant distractions.
The name for the publication was directly inspired by a quote from Fast & Furious 5 which is set in Rio, when Dom announces “This is Brasil”, as he shows off the camaraderie of the locals standing together, and the power they have. This is a really powerful but simple title, which makes Brasil appear really confident.
