OUGD603 EXTENDED PRACTICE - VIRGIN MEDIA - BRIEF EVALUATION

This brief has given me experience working with a client creating artwork for a community, ad creating my digital design work physically, which is something I’ve never done like this before.

This was a really positive client experience, as they were so accommodating, helpful, and understanding about my other commitments during the whole process. this made me really look forward to painting my box, despite the cold November weather.

This brief has taught me a lot about designing for pieces that will be used outside, in this case hand painted onto a communication box in the street. I have learnt on the job the difficulties you face, such as the dirty street, the risk of graffiti, and how much the cold weather can impact on your design work. However, I now feel more capable of dealing with such a situation again if I was ever asked to do any work outside, I will be much more aware of the challenges I would face, and be able to prepare more effectively.

If I was to paint this communication box again I would love to have so much more time to paint it and perfect it, as there was a rush to get it finished and coated in anti-graffiti paint before Christmas, to reduce the risk of graffiti, and for it to start making a positive impact on the community. I was also painting fairly quickly throughout the whole process due to the really cold weather, which meant I was rushing parts I could of spent so much longer on if the weather was warmer. This wasn’t just me not liking the cold though, as painting requires your fingers to be fully functioning, and they were really exposed to the cold weather constantly, as I couldn’t’t paint using gloves due to the use of stencils, so my fingers got very cold very quickly, which then immediately impacted upon my performance and the end result.

This brief was also showcased across lots of different platforms, such as the Independent Leeds magazine, Made in Leeds TV Channel, and various different websites. This was such good exposure for me as a creative, to have my work shown across these well known platforms, and to be able to reference this when applying for jobs is so valuable.

Overall, this was such a rewarding brief to be a part of, hearing people comment on the box as they walked past, and knowing I was making a huge positive impact on the community.
