Feedback on the advent calendar designs:
- Use of paper cut is effective as the paper reflects that of Christmas presents and wrapping paper.
- Colour palette is extremely festive and Christmassy
- Use of including the company logo on the gift tag is a clever way of placing the logo on the design, without it compromising the appearance, it's part of the design not an add-on
- Good choice using a less scripted typeface for the text based design as this has created a cleaner, more contemporary design and fulfils the brief more accurately.
- Could of thought about how the design will work as an actual advent calendar, folding up as a box, how the windows will appear and where they'll be placed, and when the windows open, will there be pictures behind the door, chocolate, or a picture on the reverse of the door and chocolate?
- Would of worked well using the Christmas trees on the text design as numbers, each tree is a window of the advent calendar. Although the trees are already fairly small and it would be hard to get the necessary detail if you added more.
- Thinking about the back of the advent calendar, it would be effective to have the present design as the front, and then the ribbon wrapping round to the back, and then being presented with a "Merry Christmas, Everyone" message, incorporating the two designs in a more interactive way.
Issue with Armed Forces research brief:
After ringing the Army Career Centre in Leeds to talk about doing an insight course, they informed me that the insight courses are only available for people who have applied to the army, as part of the selection and recruitment stages. I asked if there was any other forms of taster training events before you apply, but there isn't, which means that actually doing a training session would be very difficult, or would be a lot harder to achieve anyway, without actually joining the army, which I am not ready for yet.
Feedback on Armed Forces brief:
- Contact the Territorial Army (Reserves) to train with them for a week, as they're more likely to let me train with them than the Regular Army.
- Contact AFC Harrogate (training base for 16-17.5 year olds) to train with them as they may let me as it's for younger recruits.
- If I can't train anywhere for any period of time, ask Territorial Army (Reserves) or AFC Harrogate if I can interview one/a few of their recruits, either going for a day at the base and filming them and asking them questions, or through email correspondence.
- Explain my situation, that I'm doing it for university as part of a research project (suggested maybe not mention that I'm doing a graphic design degree)
- If I get no response within a week after enquiring, keep pushing for a response, and if I am unsuccessful then revert to different options.
- Post on Facebook if anybody knows someone who was or is in the Army to potentially interview.
- Army website has a lot of information about everything I could need, so there isn't a lack of information if I was unable to train or get an interview.
- Potentially join the Army reserves, as there isn't a lot of risk involved, although this could be a lengthy process for what I need, although I have enough time to go through this.
- Try not to use TV documentaries for too much of the research, as these have often been highly edited and gone through a whole process before it gets to the viewers, so you never know the real context of interviews with recruits. So the information would essentially be third person, not massively reliable.
- Make sure with each research method you analyse the pros and cons of it, and how reliable the information is going to be, to show I am aware of the credibility of the research I'm undertaking.
Reflection:
This feedback tutorial was so so useful as I got really in depth thorough feedback on the briefs and design work that I really needed the most. I felt really encouraged by the feedback for my Harrison Advent Calendar designs, as I was a bit unsure about their appropriateness, whether they were a bit too cutesy, however the positive feedback I received reassured me that they were appropriate and fulfil the brief. It was great getting a fresh set of eyes to look over the research brief and my work, as they look at it very objectively, and give fresh ideas that you wouldn't think of.
Next stages:
I will push forward with contacting the Territorial Army (Reserves) and AFC Harrogate about training for a day or a week with them, and if not then interviewing one/a few of their recruits in person or through email. If I get no response within a week of the last point of contact then I will crack on with researching the Army through secondary research, using their website and any other forms of information sources.
In regard to the advent calendar, although I have already submitted the designs, I will mock it up onto an actual advent calendar, or potentially print it out, putting in the the numbered windows, and designing the back of the advent calendar, using the examples from Harrison as guides, but thinking about the ribbon idea extending round the back of the advent calendar.
