Studio Brief
Produce a design and decorate Virgin Media Communication boxes in Headingley to improve the look of the area.
Considerations
The designs will be painted or sprayed onto the boxes, so this must be taken into consideration when creating your designs.
The 20 winning designs will be chosen by residents of the area, so your designs must be suitable for a mixed residential neighbourhood.
You cannot use dark colours as this causes the boxes to overheat, and the space must be well filled so the temptation for graffiti is less.
The hinges, key holes, and box identification number must remain unpainted, so this should be taken into consideration when designing.

My understanding of the brief
I understand this brief is asking me to create a vibrant design to fit on a communication box in the Headingley area. This design must appeal to both families, the elderly, students, and children, as these are the kinds of people who populate the area.
I cannot use dark colours as this will cause damage to the communication box.
Because of the method of hand painting or spraying the design onto the box, this must reflect upon the design, it must be achievable to be painted onto the box, something I feel I can achieve effectively. It should also be taken into consideration the positioning of the actual box if possible, so I know how many sides are actually going to be visible, as in the example shown all 5 sides are visible, however I know this isn’t always the case. If it isn’t possible to know beforehand, then the design should be created to ensure it still makes sense if one or more side isn’t visible.
Aims
- Experiment with bold, vibrant colours
- Create a really fun, uplifting design
- Experiment with Hungry Sandwich Club style imagery
