OUGD601 COP: DIRECTION FEEDBACK

Today I had a chat with my programme tutor about my dissertation essay, as I was a little confused about the direction and about what I was actually doing and how it will move forward.
They suggested the first thing I must do is to decide on an audience, as children will have a very different type of interactive design than the elderly for example. Children would be a great target audience as this would allow a lot more research into less digital design, which is what I am focusing on, as they're a lot more hands on. They suggested I look at cereal box games, as these allow for interaction beyond a screen, with some having bird spotting tick boxes on the back, others puzzles etc. Friends With You would also be really good to look at, as they create huge fun installations that get away from digital as well, which would still inspire children and encourage interaction with them. They also suggested I look at Pictoplasma, which is all to do with character development and fun characters, similar to Friends With You. The EDF Energy Mascot Keepon is another great example of getting children to interact with objects, as this mascot interacts with Autistic children, and it was great as they wouldn't interact with people, but they would with Keepon.
They suggested that I plan my essay around these case studies, and to define what I am classing as activity in this dissertation, and for the purposes of research and target audience to look more so at any kinds of physical interaction with an object or design, rather than actual physical exercise, as this lends itself more to physical design rather than digital apps and heart rate monitors and trackers.
This also lends itself to my COP Tutors suggestion to mark out a pitch across a road and monitor who interacts and plays with it, which is definitely something I need to pursue quickly.

This chat has been really useful to discuss in more depth some of the things discussed in my COP tutorial, and to hone down my research areas.
