Just Buy, by Marc Urtasun
This is the style of typeface that I'm interested in using for the advent calendar, as it has a real character of it's own, and is really bold with such heavy weighting. Being sans serif as well it appears very modern and clean, whilst having friendly characteristics a serif typeface would generally lack, and Christmas is all about being friendly.
Lettering for Christmas Card, by Bjorn Berglund
This is a similar style of type to Just Buy and Twenty Five in that it is bold, heavy weighted, and of a script style. I think this style works really well for a Christmas theme as it has a very magical, fun aesthetic to it, which reflects Christmas accurately.
Kitten Typeface
This is the free Kitten typeface which I have already downloaded. It is another really fun, bold, script style typeface that injects a lot of playful personality into page. This typeface would be perfect to base the advent calendar around, as it isn't too fussy, and creates a clean appearance.
Vag, by Snask
This is a really interesting typeface, CD and vinyl design by Swedish Design Studio Snask, as it incorporates many different layers to produce the final appearance. The typeface, which is what I am focused on, has similar qualities to previous typographic examples in this blog post, in that it is rounded, heavy weighted and clean, however with the characters all touching, it gives off more of a graffiti vibe than I want for this Christmas advent calendar.
Reflection:
This research has been really useful to see what is already out there in terms of fun, clean typography. The typefaces that I have found will prove really useful to base my own typeface from, or to use these typefaces that I have found themselves.
The next stage will be to start sketching ideas out for the layout, and to have a good think about the actual size of the advent calendar, how big actually is 20.5cm x 20.5cm? I feel like it's going to be a lot smaller than I think, and this has to be taken into consideration as to how complex the typeface is going to be, as I don't want it to be overwhelming. I also need to think about what I'm actually going to include on the advent calendar, just type, imagery as well? What is going on the back of the advent calendar too, as I know previous entries have had specific text on the backs. And finally, I should consider if I will produce this design digitally or using paper cut, as if I chose paper cut, I will have to take this into consideration when designing, as I don't want to make life massively complicated for myself and create a very detailed design that will be impossible to cut out with a scalpel.
