OUGD603 EXTENDED PRACTICE - UK GREETINGS - BRIEF EVALUATION

Working on the YCN UK Greetings brief has been one of my favourite briefs this year, due to the creative freedom allowed within the brief, the production of physical outcomes, and choosing a topic which had a lot of depth and scope within it, and which was also a huge gap in the market.
The time management of this brief was really effective, as I was able to explore all of the different ideas I wanted to, and produce them to the highest standard possible, resulting in a submission I was very proud of. The time management of this brief was so effective as I prioritised working on this brief from an early stage, giving myself plenty of time to realise the brief fully and effectively before the deadline.
In this brief I explored the topic of LGBT, which resulted in me having to be quite correct about my designs, so as not to offend or create the wrong impression. This is something I wasn’t used to designing with in mind, but it really made me think more closely about my design decisions, and what different people may think about them, rather than just myself. This also provided me with the opportunity to make this a really fun topic as well, creating extremely playful designs, which was something I really enjoyed creating, and really exploring different settings and possibilities.
Another aspect of this brief I really enjoyed was actually printing out and making the assets for this brief, such as the envelopes, cards and wrapping paper. This gave me the opportunity to build a scene with the work I produced, which gave me a great insight to how it would actually look if someone used my design work for it’s intended use, to give to someone as a present.
An area I struggled with on this brief was applying the concept to different assets without it looking like I was copying one pattern onto lots of different products. Perhaps I should of created additional scenes for the assets, although the reason why this wasn’t done initially was because I didn’t want to make the collection full of completely different designs. The whole point of greetings card and gift dressing design is that you should be able to apply it to different assets rather than recreating it for each new asset.
Overall, this brief went really smoothly, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process, and am hoping to produce similar work to this is other briefs to expand on this style of design work.
