OUGD602 PPP: THINKING ABOUT EMPLOYABILITY WORKSHOP

Focusing on:
1) Portfolio/CV
2) Social Media
3) XP/Experience
4) Networking

Hyperisland (master courses 6 months)

Rules of today/the game:
- Be open
- Be honest
- Don't be stupid

PLAY LIKE A TEAM

Portfolio and CV
- Fanqiowang - super simple, tells little stories through describing their work. Great narrative runs through the site
-Veronica Ditting - super simple
- Must be easy to navigate
- It pays to have a website, and then link to behance
- Clarity, simplicity, presentation, information, and contact
- People want to find info they're after quickly

Social Media
- Clear distinction between personal and professional
- Watch out for Twitter. Don't post negativity. Watch spelling
- Keep personal and professional far away from one another
- Have some kind of strategy, continuity and substance
- Social media profile is an extension of your CV

Exercise one: Start, stop continue
For this exercise we had to show our professional social media sites to a group of peers, and they had to write down things we need to start doing, things we should stop doing, and things we should continue doing.

Start:
- More tags to get you noticed on Instagram
- Start and independant site
- Put more work on website
- Have work in progress on Instagram
- Thinking about putting work into context - website on computers, apps on mobile
- More work
- Less random holiday themed messages

Stop:
- Being shy about your work!

Continue:
- Adding images to social media
- Sharing your work on social media
- Developing website - logo on there? Your name?

Exercise one reflection
This exercise has definitely helped me to realise some major issues I need to address, such as having my logo on my website which is so important and I hadn't even realised I hadn't got on my website! It has also been really helpful to see other people's social media sites, and has shown me a really good site Adobe Portfolio which has some really interesting themes and it a lot easier to use than Cargo Collective which is what I'm using at the moment.

Exercise two: Stinky Fish
For this exercise we had to draw a stinky fish, and write down all our anxieties about our work in it, and then discuss them with a small ground of peers

This is my stinky fish.
Exercise two reflection
This exercise got me to write down what I was worried about, which alleviated a bit of pressure I was feeling by getting those things down. It was also so refreshing to hear other peoples worries as they were so similar to mine, and it was comforting to know that I'm not the only one who has these worries.

Networking
- A lot of work will come from friends
- Surround yourself with nice people who do interesting things
- Do something you enjoy!
- The worst thing that could happen is they don't get back to you
- Be aspirational

Exercise three: Circle of inspiration
For this exercise we had to research people, studios, brands that inspire us, and write down their contact details to contact them asking them questions about their work, advice etc

Workshop reflection
This workshop has been relatively useful to get me straight to the issues and things that I need to do to progress, rather than waffling around things. It also allowed me to talk about some of the things that I was worried about, which has really helped me to understand where I'm at.
