Pictoplasma came about as a reaction to the vast amount of icono-graphic figures on websites, billboards and food packaging. They wanted to create a set of considered, stylistically sure footed, high quality figures against the mass of random figures and mascots that was currently out there.
They were also interested in using character design to create a "memorable, up-to-date and universal language that does not have to rely on discarded, standardized cliches." (Thaler, 2003, p.9)
"Characters are signs in an independant, graphic language. They address viewers directly, emotionally and independently of their cultural background." (Thaler, 2003, p.9)
"True quality remains the skilfully executed, strong visual idea, and the figure's ability to reach the viewer." (Thaler, 2003, p.10)
What's the difference between an action figure and puppets and dolls?
Puppets and dolls are considered "high-touch", however action figures are more "high-tech". They are generally collectibles, toys for adults, precise, clean, slick and painted, and normally end up on shelves on show. The idea of an action figure is to own them, they have no value as being used practically. (Thaler, 2003, p.107)
Action figures
They originated from cartoons, and were traditionally sold in comic book shops, typically a "boys' thing". Not long after, science fiction and fantasy figures were created, and today you'll find religious or political action figures as well. They are most popular in Japan, Korea and the USA. (Thaler, 2003, p.107)
Designer toys
Often 3D versions of popular designs or illustrations which are sold as a short series, or limited edition. Designer toys celebrate their own characters, and sometimes their creators. They are not tied to existing models, and so designers have more creative freedom designing them, and often turn out to be bizarre, politically incorrect, and have a rough appearance. (Thaler, 2003, p.107)

They are "high-touch", more cuddly, warm, interactive and social than action figures or designer toys. As children we related to puppets and dolls, and nowadays adults are becoming reconnected with their childhood favourites. Adult puppets, dolls and objects are often of adult themes such as boxing and S&M, however reimagining these into children's toys is a "playful way of adapting and processing the adult world (catharsis)." (Thaler, 2003, p.133)
The rustic and handmade appearance of some puppets and dolls makes them appear clumsy, and appear to be more personal than mass produced products.
