OUGD601 COP: LEVEL 5 VISITING PROFESSIONAL RECAP

Parallax Studio Talk - Designing for Digital

- Design using a grid (easier to scale up and down)
- Web fonts - limited availability as a lot of font aren't web usable
- Be organised - eg PhotoShop layers - easy to pass file on (to developer eg) and it being understood
- Vector smart objects in photoshop files are easier form of image for developers to work with
- Interactivity - hover states - mock up on After Effects so developers can see what you mean
- Talk to developers to find out whats easy to produce and what isn't
- Consistency - style guide (extension from brand guidelines) containing fonts, sizes, colours to help developers produce the right thing. Build framework which style guide can be used to design other elements

Kimberley Bottomley - Intro to User Experience

UX examples in history:
- Leonardo da Vinci's Kitchen Nightmare - da Vinci designed a kitchen to be more efficient for food production and for chefs and kitchen staff. Conveyor belts to transport food around the kitchen.
- Don Norman - first UX professional in 1995 - Apple iPhone released in 2007 was one of the first effective designs which worked with people, rather than just showing off technology.

On and offline experiences are increasingly merging together. THE RISE OF THE DIGITAL NATIVE.

What if you ignore the needs of the user?
Brasilia roadway system - people carved their own paths.
What if you understand the needs of the user?
Disney wristband - booking info stored on it and you can add info to it to plan your trip when it arrives in the post. You can add meals - tracker - restaurant knows when you're close to prepare the table and food.

How to include your users?
1) Identify users (create your own - we did it)
2) Challenge assumptions (made when creating users) - research, surveys, observation (be where users are)
3) Include users - share designs - can audience 'use' your designs

ONLY Design Studio Talk

- Digital design and brand consultancy
- Don't need to code to be a web designer
- Design websites for brands. Also design a secondary website allowing the brand to add new pages to the website following the brand guidelines.

Design Process:
1) Research - create users for target market, use them to help make decisions throughout
2) Wireframing - sketches, prototypes, product testing
3) Visual Design - take frames and add design to it
4) Front-end - developers work with you the designer. Make sure what developers are making matches what you designs and works the way you designed it.
